Jon Culshaw
Personal Life
Born in Ormskirk, Lancashire in 1968, John is the youngest of three children. His father Jim, who served with the Royal Engineers in WWII, is a retired joiner. He cant recall what his mum Theresa used to do She was just mum and was always there for us.
When visitors came round to the house the young Jon used to sit in silence in the corner then when theyd gone I would do a take off of Aunty Amy (who sounded like Alan Bennett) or Stanley from three doors up
He first discovered he had a talent for mimicry though in the school playground If any of my pals were being bullied, I would break it up using the voice of the headmaster.
He had no interest in school at all. He spent more time practicing his take-offs than he did studying I wanted to get into radio and knew qualifications wouldnt be something that counted for me.
Did You Know?
Jon's first wind up victim live on air was his Aunt Margaret. He called her pretending to be from the water board. I told her that alligators had escaped from the local zoo and were stuck in a pipe under her house. I told her to keep flushing the toilet every two minutes to help dislodge them. She even asked me whether she should keep the seat down to stop them crawling into her bathroom.
Jon famously prank-called Tony Blair at 10 Downing Street pretending to be William Hague! The PM mentioned it in the House of Commons and Jon found myself being besieged by the media.
Jon performed at St James's Palace to celebrate "The Archers'" 50th anniversary. Prince Charles was in the front row and Jon performed his flawless impression of the Prince of Wales. "The Prince was laughing really heartily... Afterwards, Charles said: 'The voice and gestures are coming along nicely.'"
Credentials
In 1993 Jon was the winner of Radio One's Talent 93 competition.
Jon's prgramme "Dead Ringers" began as a cult radio show on Radio 4. It has won six major comedy awards since it began in 2000.
Jerry Springer was so impressed with Jon's impression of him that he asked Jon to do his talk show while he took a couple of weeks holiday.
