Ian McCaskill
Like all the best things in life I encountered meteorology completely by accident. Bit like the kids, I suppose, but I soon stopped that! Even way back in 1959 we had this amazing Youth Training Scheme. It was called National Service. Yes, I am that old. I was studying science at Glasgow University and hoped to teach but the Royal Air Force had other plans. Two years in the Meteorological Corps and teaching was forgotten. And here I am, thirty-odd years later, sixteen met. offices later and still trying to get the hang of it!
I am now based at the BBC Television Centre where I have been since 1978, the dear old days of magnetic rubber and three broadcasts a day. Now we do 46 a day, and all the radio forecasts. Be grateful you can't see them all! Most go to Asia, where our audience is MUCH bigger!
I live in a Buckinghamshire village with the memory of my dearly beloved wife, and with my frequently beloved daughter, neither of whom seems to have acquired culinary or horticultural skills. The unfairly maligned BBC canteen ensures that I continue to inflame ex-pats by obscuring Portugal!
A fellow of the Royal Meteorological Society Ian lists travel and reading among his hobbies. He also admits to be being very fond of food and has been a guest judge on BBC1 popular "Masterchef" competition. With his colleague John Kettley, Ian was given a make over by the BBC daytime show "Style Challenge" in October 1996.
My interests are simple. I attempt to keep both the village pubs profitable. I love the cinema and theatre and my ambition is to make the weather forecast even user-friendlier.
