Tom McClean
Tom McClean was the First Man In History to Row The Atlantic Single-handed.
Tom McClean is a warm and enthusiastic speaker who is capable of motivating and inspiring an audience to greater things. He speaks about his life and the motivation, which is needed to succeed in both Business and Adventure.
Tom has a remarkable record when it comes to achievement and adventure. His career reflects an extraordinary capacity for succeeding against all odds; never daunted.
In 1969, while serving with the SAS, Tom McClean aboard Super Silver became the first man in history to row the Atlantic single-handed. Using his personal survival instincts and with no previous knowledge of sea conditions, he completed his perilous journey in a 20-ft long open Dory in 70 days.
1982, Tom achieved the world record for sailing the world's smallest yacht across the Atlantic and repeated the feat the following year in 1983 in an even shorter vessel (7ft 9 inches), not much more than a bathtub!
Two years later in 1985, he re-affirmed Britain's rights to Rockall (the tiny outcrop of rock in the Atlantic), by spending 40 days and nights living there alone, surviving on a ledge against all that the wild Atlantic sea could throw at him.
His wackiest adventure was to design and help build a 37ft long bottle-shaped boat, the Typhoo Atlantic Challenger, which he sailed from New York to Falmouth, followed a year later by a 3,000-mile voyage around Europe in the same craft.
In 1994, he began his largest and most ambitious project to date - the construction of Moby - Prince of Whales! The world's only 65 ft long, 25ft high, giant whale shaped boat was launched amid intense interest in May 1996 into the Moray Firth. Sea trials took place among the dolphins and Tom set off on a circumnavigation of Britain (which he has now completed) showing around the country what life is like aboard.
His next intention is to embark on an exciting adventure to cross the Atlantic from London to New York and back again once commercial backing has been found.
Tom talks about adventure, meeting challenges on your own, getting your mind set for the task and deriving strength from within. A wonderful and charming personality he can light up the evening with pleasant presentations and talks that will leave his audiences wanting to touch the skies.
