Martin Wood
Martins speech is based on the challenges of arranging and executing a solo rowing crossing of the Atlantic as they relate to the City and broader working environment. Most of the motivational element of the speech is drawn from seven truths learnt while spending three years planning the trip and seven truths learnt on the sixty-eight days alone of the crossing.
Educated at Queen Elizabeths in north London, Exeter University and the Commando Training Centre, Martin has always had a desire for adventure.
Accused of spying in Sudan at the age of eighteen he extracted himself from a jail in Western Sudan (Kasalla) using all his powers of persuasion. His oratory skills were regularly tested, including talking his way out of another jail, this time in Rajastan, North West India.
After leaving the Marines and completing his MBA Martin joined the City of London, working for NM Rothschild & Sons, Standard Bank and Benfield Advisory.
While at these institutions he was involved in a wide range of financial transactions and structures at various levels of responsibility and became experienced at working with different levels of management and operational staff and developing an in depth understanding of the City and how different teams function in the Financial environment.
After nearly a decade in the City of London working in the front line, arranging project finance loans for gold mines, raising private equity for insurance companies and selling private security companies he decided to row solo and unassisted across the Atlantic.
This life changing experience was a revelatory time, bringing together the needs for dogged determination, limitless self-motivation, attention to detail and the raw desire to succeed. Numerous press and television interviews and debates followed (Sky News, The Times, Barbados Broadcasting Company and others) and Martin is now offering his experiences in the form of a motivational, inspiring and amusing speech.
The message: -
It is easier to give up than to keep going - People expect other people to fail - The only way to get something done is to start right now - Teams achieve, individuals struggle - The best judge of success is you - It is only impossible if you let it be - Never give in - Anything can be used to your advantage anything - A positive attitude beats a strong body - Every change or problem is an opportunity - Bad things just happen, good things have to be made to happen - If you deserve to succeed you will - It is easier to deal with adversity if you act immediately - Nobody can think of everything be flexible and go easy on yourself
