Derek Redmond

Down but not out.

A member of the Milton Keynes Athletic Club Derek Redmond started his career at the tender age of 7. He raced his way through the ranks and came to local prominence as County Champion and record holder in the 400m sprints.

With an extraordinary number of on track achievements including a World Gold Medal in the 4x400m Relay. His career was tragically cut short during the Barcelona Olympics.

In spite of a career being dogged by serious injury, Derek’s achievements were remarkable. It took 13 operations on his Achilles tendons and knees to force him out of many major competitions including the 1988 Olympics, 1990 European and Commonwealth Games and 1993 World Championships. An extraordinary talent, many felt he was never given the opportunity to show what he was really capable of.
Derek, along with his father, left a memory in the minds of the people that will last forever, when during the semi-finals of the Olympic Games in Barcelona he hobbled the last 250 metres after a serious hamstring injury mid race. The footage has become one of the most powerful and enduring sporting images of modern times, inspiring many around the world.

Besides athletics, Derek has played basketball for England and professionally for the Birmingham Bullets. He coaches and advises international athletes at Birchfield Harriers and has played competitive rugby union for Coventry RFC, Stow RFC and has even played alongside the likes of Will Carling, Brian Moore, Rory Underwood and Gavin Hastings in a number of highly publicised invitational games.
Derek has keenly kept himself busy with a number of business ventures, besides being a regular on television and radio, including appearances on programmes like Noel’s House Party and Equinox, he also presents a prime time basketball show for ITV.

Derek has a vast experience and work ethics. Derek is able to provide a unique and entertaining insight into what it takes to be focused and determined, to persevere, to overcome and succeed as an individual and as a team.
